d3 LA02 - Black Squares

 Part A

Using up to four flat black squares, create an image (shape) to express the meaning of each of the following six words:
  1. order          4. congested
  2. increase      5. tension
  3. bold            6. playful
Then, select the most effective solution for each and redraw in the bigger square. * the four black squares can be different sizes, allowing for a far greater range of possible solutions.

Objective:
To use two dimensional design principles to explore, experiments, develop and extend your graphic vocabulary. These principles include framal reference (relation between the objects and the frame), contrasts of scale, cropping, overlapping, touching, illusion of space, dynamics and stability.

                                                                 ORDER

                                                            INCREASE

                                                                BOLD

                                                            CONGESTED

                                                               TENSION

                                                                PLAYFUL

             ORDER                                                INCREASE                                              BOLD

       CONGESTED                                              TENSION                                          PLAYFUL

Part B

Find magazine advertisements or business cards that demonstrate each of the six categories mentioned above.

ORDER
INCREASE

CONGESTED
BOLD

TENSION
PLAYFUL

Summary
This activity emphasises how something as basic as an arrangement of black squares within a frame can suggest meaning. This demonstrates the power of position of visual elements. In this example we used black squares but any object such as letterforms (in fact, especially letterforms) can be used in the same way. The black squares can represent anything that you use in your design: it's the effect of spatial relationships that is universal.
